L’Enfants et Les Sortilèges

This speculative design was based around the french opera 'L'Enfants et Les Sortilèges' a production that follows the journey of a boy and his strained Mother - Son relationship.

My design was focused around the infantilisation the boy receives from his mother and how that makes him feel small and unimportant. This was done through the use of scale, creating the boys bedroom completely out of scale to the performers within, enhancing his feelings of inferiority. The mother herself never being seem and simply represented via a large shadowy figure that appears through the doorway of his bedroom.

The costumes were designed to match those of circus performers/ gymnasts in order to allow for the inanimate objects to blend into their larger prop/set counterparts and allow for dancers/ gymnasts to bring a new layer or entertainment to the production.
